Scottish Borders

This tour takes you through the beautiful countryside that was loved by Sir Walter Scott throughout his life. Firstly, we travel to Peebles and stop for coffee or wander through the old town, before proceeding to Abbotsford, the border home of Sir Walter Scott.

He built his house overlooking his beloved River Tweed, and as he was an avid collector, his house contains many beautiful paintings, armour, weaponry and historical artefacts.

We continue to Melrose, which lies in a delightful setting at the foot of the Eildon Hills, an  area once occupied by the Romans.

This is the burial place of the heart of King Robert the Bruce.

We can also visit the Trimontium Exhibition which gives an insight into the Roman occupation of the borders and Priorwood Garden which specialises in dried flowers. Dryburgh Abbey

Finally we visit Scott's View which is a spectacular view over the countryside to the Eildon Hills, a favourite spot of Sir Walter's. It is here that the horses in his funeral cortege stopped en route to Dryburgh Abbey, just as they always did so that Sir Walter could admire the view.

We head back, following the River Leithen through the hills to Edinburgh

Other famous border homes that can be visited time permitting include,

Traquair House, which claims to be the oldest continuously inhabited house in Scotland. William the Lion held court here in 1209 and it is claimed to have been visited by 27 Scottish and English Monarchs.

Thirleston Castle which dates from the 1590's Mellerstane House, one of the great Adam houses of Scotland dates from 1725 by William Adam, and 1770 - 78 by Robert Adam.

Floors Castle, overlooking the River Tweed and home of the Roxburghe family, which houses a collection of French 17th and 18th Century furniture and fine paintings, Chinese and Dresden porcelain and tapestries.
